Chapel of Saints Mary Salomé and Mary Jacobé

The boat at the front of the chapel refers to the sea voyage that the saints and their servant Sarah took from Jerusalem to the Camargue in France, not far from Beaucaire.

The painting at the back of the chapel represents the same boat and the same three persons:



In the background we see what should be a sunrise rather than a sunset, since they were traveling west by northwest. The Camargue is quite flat so the cliffs imply that they are following the more hilly part of the coast, perhaps as little as 40 miles (64 km.) to the east of their destination.
